"Lawmen Seeking Youth, 16, Who Left Home Last Night"

Members of the Alamogordo Department of Public Safety today were continuing a search for Albert Engman, 16, 2300 Harvard, after he was reported to have left his home last night about 5.  Engman left a note for his brother telling him to come into the foothills behind the Alamogordo Branch of New Mexico State University to pick up a 303 rifle and indicated that Engman intended to kill himself, police were told.

According to investigating officers, Engman had taken "some pills" early Thursday morning but also had taken some other pills to counteract the first dose.  He also had given a note to his mother, Mrs. Glenn C. Engman, explaining that he was not happy with his life and his relationship with his girl friend and her parents, the family reported.

The search for Engman was halted at midnight last night but resumed this morning.

"Body of Youth, 17, Is Found in Brushy Arroyo" / "2-Day Search Ended"

A two-day search for a missing Alamogordo High School student came to an end Saturday morning when the body of Albert F. Engman, 17, was found by Sheriff Terrel Herndon approximately 300 yards north of the Alamogordo Branch of New Mexico State University.  County Coroner E. T. Faigle ruled the boy died from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The search for Engman began late Thursday afternoon when he left his home at 2300 Harvard Ave. to go into the foothills and take his own life, according to investigating authorities.  Several members of the Department of Public Safety began looking for Engman about 5:30 p.m Thursday.  The search continued, without success, through Friday afternoon and was begun again shortly after daylight Saturday morning.  A Mounted Patrol unit, two helicopters from Holloman and several vehicles were involved in the search.  Herndon was in one of the helicopters when he spotted Engman's body about 10:30 a.m. near a large amount of brush in the bottom of an arroyo.

Funeral services are pending with Mullins-Hamilton Funeral Home until the boy's father, Glenn C. Engman, returns to Alamogordo from Thailand.

Engman was born Oct. 14, 1951 in Oakland, Calif.  He had resided with his family in Alamogordo for three and a half years.  He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Ray and Doug Engman, and a sister, Jeannie Engman, all of Alamogordo; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Alice Engman, Carthage, S.D.; and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bob McClure of Reno, Nev.

Albert,

We were in History class together. I was two or three desks behind him. He was nice and funny and sometimes serious at times. It is very sad that we as his classmates lost him at such a young age. I remember the days in school after Albert died and my parents reactions...it was so strange being in class and Albert wasn't there. I felt sorry for his family and his girlfriend...so hard for all involved. He was a precious young man, who left this earth too soon. He made a positive impact on his classmates and was missed.
