Cheryl Weber Obituary

Cheryl Ferguson Weber obituary, 1953-2023, Lubbock, TX

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Combest Family Funeral Homes and Crematory - Lubbock on Dec. 7, 2023.

Cheryl Ferguson Weber, M.D. (also known as Cherry to her schoolmates) passed away on December 5, 2023, at the age of 70 at her home in Lubbock, TX, surrounded by friends, family, and one beloved mutt dog.

Cheryl was born on February 13, 1953, in Alamogordo, NM, the eldest of three daughters. She was preceded in death by her parents Tilford and Betty Ferguson and sister Mary Beth Ferguson.

Cheryl attended Alamogordo High School and then got a couple of degrees at the University of New Mexico. She was a dedicated scholar (of anthropology, medicine, and religion, among other subjects). In her free time, Cheryl loved the outdoors and was an active member of the Lubbock Bike Club and of the West Texas Running Club and participated in triathlons and cross-country skiing.

Cheryl began her career as an archaeologist in northwestern NM with the Bureau of Land Management. Her expertise in the field led her to contribute a chapter on Puebloan skeletal finds in the book "Tijeras Canyon: Analyses of the Past.” We suggest everyone pick up a copy.

Her love of anatomy took her back to school to study medicine at UNM in Albuquerque, which turned out be a good move not only for her career, but also because that is when and where she met an amiable bike mechanic who she later married and spent the next 42 years happily beside. Cycling brought them together and continued to be a shared passion that lasted their entire lives.

After completing her M.D., Cheryl spent 28 years in rehab medicine, specializing in the diagnosis of peripheral nerve injuries and diseases.

Cheryl was blessed to make Covenant Presbyterian Church her spiritual home, and she found solace and strength in her faith and in Covenant’s tight-knit community. Cheryl and Fred were drawn to the church because of their centering prayer group.

Anyone who knew Cheryl would agree that she was fiercely independent and proud of her fitness, swimming at the Tech Rec Center several times a week and walking her dog, Sammy, and later Murphy, all over her Tech Terrace neighborhood.

Cheryl will be deeply missed by her surviving family members, including her nieces Melissa Weber, Jenny Smith, and Leigha Rynae Basham; her nephews Brad Smith and Kyle Basham; and her sister Kerry Basham. She is also survived by her husband Fred Weber and her daughter Amy Weber. Cheryl will be remembered by the many who loved her for her unwavering determination, her love for the outdoors, and her dedication to her career and family.

Family and friends are invited to her Celebration of Life on December 13th at 2:00 pm at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 4600 48th St, Lubbock, TX. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Cheryl’s favorite charities: the South Plains Wildlife Rehab Center, Animal Humane Society, Hospice of Lubbock, or Meals on Wheels.

Ah, Cherry. So much history together at the beginning of our lives. I remember your room! You were so organized and disciplined. I swam with you once at UNM. You accomplished so much while I was trying to figure out life. You were such an inspiration in many ways. I'll always remember your love of anatomy and your full life. Hugs to your family.

Like others, I'm saddened by Cheryl's passing and send my condolences to her family and friends.
My earliest memory is of Cheryl beating all the boys in sprints in the 5th grade.  Who knew that would be an apt metaphor for her life?
In junior high she served in student council where she demonstrated her leadership and empathy.
I never interacted with Cheryl professionally but can imagine she would have been so good!
Rest in peace!

This is such sad news. My deepest condolences to her family and friends. Cheryl was an amazing girl and an even more amazing woman. Her educational and career accomplishments are impressive. When I think of Cheryl, words like kind, helpful, caring, inspiring, cheerful, bright, and adventurous come to mind. I'm so thankful that I was able to reconnect with her at our 40th Reunion. Rest in Paradise Cheryl. You are forever in our hearts.

It's hard to imagine Cheryl gone. She was an enigma to me in high school -- so smart and in my eyes so self assusred and able to interact in any situation. I remember her smile with the flashing silver tooth. In later years I enjoyed connecting with her at reunions and through occasional emails. She was a model of quiet self knowledge, sharing positivity and support as she continued to marvel at this life on earth. She will be missed!

I remember Cheryl from elementary school at Sierra Vista.  Most vividly, I remember her in our fourth grade class with Mrs. Fisk, who was an artist and taught art with the history.  Cheryl was an accomplished artist and fascinated with the history of New Mexico even then.  I remember her mother organized a 4H club for us and we enjoyed doing a lot of arts and crafts there also.  Cheryl was taking an art course in La Luz at some point, and she invited me to attend a class with her.  I'll always remember how focused Cheryl was, and yet how well rounded she was in her life.  It is fascinating to know how all those experiences came together in her life.  I know for her family that losing her in such a quick and unexpected manner is so very difficult.  There are sweet sweet memories of her everywhere, and may these bring you all comfort in the future.

I knew Cherry from Heights Elementary to college at UNM.  We were roommates for a year.  It worked out well for her as I was never there.  Too busy with my future husband!.  Cherry blessed all she knew.  She was the most honest human I think I've ever known.

I knew Cherry from 7th grade through high school. Cherry has been my role model, teaching my kids as an example of how Cherry in the halls of school always said "hi" to everyone. She wasn't caught up in the adolescent whims of trying to fit in or be part of a click. She was just Cherry. I remember Cherry and I think Pam Melton were the spokesmen for a walkout at Chaparral Junior High for inadequate textbooks for the students to use. She was a kind and caring person that I enjoyed through school, in Rainbows, and at class reunions. Cherry left her mark on society. May we all strive to achieve her mark of goodness to society.

I remember Cheryl from first grade in Mrs. Collins class.  She was one of my closes friends.  We moved in when I was in second grade but returned for my sophmore year.  She was always kind.  I was greatly sadden to hear of her passing.

I was saddened to hear about Cherry's stroke, brain bleed, and her death. I met her in 7th grade and we were friends in school clubs, Rainbows, and extracurricular fun!  My sympathies to Fred, Amy, and the rest of the family.  Cherry's personality and character were admired by many of us!
