"Rolling Crash Fatal To Young Woman" / "Fiance of Bride-Elect Is Injured"

A young Alamogordo woman died Thursday afternoon near the Burgett Nursery on U.S. 82 when the car in which she was riding with her fiance went out of control and rolled, throwing her 127 feet beyond where the vehicle came to rest. State Police said Gail A. Flaugher, 19, of 805 Cedar Avenue died instantly in the 2:30  p.m. crash.

Reports said Michael R. Brown, 22, 1517 Jefferson Ave., Miss Flaugher's fiance, was driving when the mishap occured.  Brown received lacerations and bruises as the car flipped and was taken by Department of Public Safety ambulance to Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted.

Officers at the scene, in reconstructing the fatality, said the couple's 1971 Dodge was headed west on U.S. 82, rounding a curve, when the right wheets went off the pavement.  The car swerved back onto the highway to the centerline then veered back off the right side of the paved surface.  The account said the compact car returned once again to the highway, this time in a broadside skid, from which it flipped one and a quarter times, throwing the victim through the windshield as it rolled.  State Police Officer Ken Thompson investigated the fatal accident.

Funeral services for Miss Flaugher have been scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Hamilton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack L. Stricklan and Rev. W. W. Diamond officiating.

Interment is scheduled at Monte Vista Cemetery with graveside services being conducted by Order of Rainbow members.  Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Gail and I were in Rainbow girls together. She died from a car accident in the mountains. During her funeral service at the First Baptist church, I remember the minister saying Gail had received Christ and now was with Jesus in Heaven. We did the graveside service. How hard it was on her mother during the service. Gail was witty and lots of fun. Now she and my son are in Heaven together having the time of their lives for all eternity!
