In Memory

Doug Phillips

Doug Phillips

Born: July 17, 1952 / Passed: June 18, 2013 in Pipe Creek, TX

Doug was born in Berkeley, California.  Doug’s dad was an Airman in the service, they traveled across the seas and back when he was a young boy.  He graduated from Alamogordo High School in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1971 which he attended after his father was assigned to Holloman AFB, New Mexico.  He then attended college at Berkeley Conservatory of Music and then Berkeley University.  He had a love for music, which has been in his family for 3 generations.  His mom was a Jazz singer and his grandmother was a Concert Pianist, First Chair Violinist and Opera Singer.  His Grandmother (father’s side) was a Music Professor at Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.  Doug’s favorite instrument to play was his bass guitar and he had a beautiful tenor voice which he used to harmonize with many other artists on the weekends.  Doug had some highlights in his life as a musician with some famous artists.  Last but not least, he was a handy man in carpentry work around the home and enjoyed barbequing for the family while listening to country to smooth jazz on the back deck.  During the Cajun Fest, Doug was the music coordinator which led to a successful time for the community of Lakehills.  Kathy and Doug met in Alamogordo, NM and were married 39 years (July 11, 1974).  They had two beautiful daughters Natasha, married to John Comstock and Charlene married to Trey Holt.  They also have one full of energy, awesome Grandson, Colton (son of John & Natasha).  Doug loved the Lord, he treasured his family and cherished his friendships.  Doug had the biggest heart and helped so many in so many different ways through the years.   Doug was loved and respected by all he met and he will be missed greatly.

Mathew 11:28 – 30

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I'm sorry to hear of my old bandmate's passing. I had been trying to get in contact with him for the past two years, but with no success.

Doug and I first met in late summer of 1970. Both our fathers had been transferred to Holloman from Germany that year. Even though we had lived on different bases, it turned out we had at least one friend in common (a drummer named Zach Long) and soon ended up in a band called Friends that played a few gigs at Holloman. Right after graduation, Doug and I moved out to a small town in Oklahoma to take our shot at being rock stars. We actually got pretty close, too, but ultimately ended up returning to Alamogordo the following autumn. We stayed close friends over the next few years, playing in a few bands together. In fact, Doug was the best man at my wedding in 1974. I lost track of him when I joined the Air Force that year.

Incidentally, Doug was an excellent lead guitarist when I knew him (I was the bass player back then). Kinda ironic that he ended up switching to bass while I ended up on lead guitar (but not as good as he had been).

Anyway, goodbye for now, old roommate. We'll meet up again sometime.
