You will be missed Art... You were the one person to encourage the compitition between Central and Chapperal Jr. High..at our reunion..... You were the driving force and the best cheerleader for Central... I enjoyed meeting your wife and seeing you at our 40th class reunion... I will always remember Arthur Salas as a wonderful person and dear friend.

I am shocked and saddened to learn of the loss of this good man. I have so many nice memories of him from  our school days, and had such fun reconnecting with him at the reunion.  Ralph and I so enjoyed being tablemates with Art and Mariela, and I feel blessed to have had that time with him.  Our condolences to the family.

I am stunned and saddened at the loss of my friend Art Salas.  Like many of you, I've known Art since we were track and field competitors in junior high.  Art always made the competition fun and could connect with everyone on a personal level even at that young age.  I too enjoyed seeing Art and first meeting Mariela at the 40th high school reunion.  Art attended my 60th birthday party in September 2012 and obviously impressed many of my newer friends at that occassion.  They ALL remember Art and were amazed that such a vibrant man could leave us so suddenly.  I last saw Art in March 2013 at the memorial service for my 31 year old son David who died of unknown causes while vacationing in Vientiane, Laos on January 17, 2013.  Art was all about family and personal connections and gave me some much needed comfort at the time.  Art was special, and he made everyone he met feel special too.  I will miss him.  Art, you will always be in my thoughts and heart.  My deepest condolences to Mariela and the entire Salas/Montenegro family.

The Angels must have been very blue, to have called home Art Salas so urgently and so early.  May he be in a place where he can spread his trademark good humor and good will without limitations.  But now, we here left behind are blue.  He made it easier to be a better and happier person when around him.  What a blessing. May the Salas family find comfort.

God Bless you Art!  You were such an inspiration to us all.  You taught us how to live and how to have fun.  Central Jr. High School seems so very long ago, but your memories will be in our hearts always.  Thanks for the good life.

Art and I worked together at NMSU on the work/study program. Whenever Art entered the office, the atmosphere changed to laughter. He was glad to see everyone. We worked hard and laughed harder when Art was in the room. It was great seeing him at the 40th reunion. Leading the pack in the race. Humor and zest for life had not left him. May the Salas's and friends be filled with wonderful memories...he enriched us all.

A Tribute to Art Salas and Lyman Stough

We look upon the graves of two more from our time: Lyman Stough and Art Salas.

So many from our time and place are gone. Vanished as if into thin air.  The light that shone from their eyes forever extinguished. Strong hands, swift feet, forever motionless. Voices forever silenced.

I struggle to remember when these pale shadows in my memory possessed substance, blossoming with the beauty and vitality of youth. I struggle to remember their voices, voices telling stories of an enchanted place and a wondrous time.

I want to tell you their stories. Stories that would be delightful for me to relate and a joy for you to hear.  Stories that would honor those from that time who still live. Stories that would bring to life those already summoned by dark night eternal. But my memory is flawed and my power of expression limited.

I grasp for that which I cannot reach. Our time had no firm foundation. It changed, disappeared. So many who bloomed have perished. The flowers have disappeared, wasted by time, felled by death.

I know enough of their stories to say this: their adversaries respected them; their families and friends loved them; their passing grieves us deeply.

And this I hope: they have gone home.
